Everyone who has met a little child has seen it; the amazement of a little child. The child sees a bus, and gets all excited about it, it sees a dog, and cant sit still in its pram. It sees things that we grown-ups are all too blind to notice; it expresses its enthusiasm with the whole body and is deeply disappointed when we cannot share its experience. We have long ago got used to dogs and buses and we weed out all the irrelevant details we pass by every day. We have forgotten how thrilled and amazed we once were about these things. But when you think of it; a dog is something exceptional, a bus astonishing, and the sparkling eyes of a little child something totally divine. Can we still find the way back to the amazement of the little child within us? I am convinced we can, and we have a lot to win by trying to do so.

Open your window on a starry night and watch the sky. Just think most of these stars are so far from you that you cannot be sure whether they exist at all anymore. They could have died down millions of years ago, but you still see their light. What you see is an image of the sky as it was a very long time ago. See and be amazed! Look at your own body. Think of how well organized your blood circulation is; all the cells, white and red corpuscles, blood plates, all with their specific roles to keep you healthy. Everything works a thousand times cleverer than the most advanced computer, without us having to think about it. Be amazed!

Often it isnt until we find ourselves in a crisis and, like Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, are reminded of our mortality, that we learn how to enjoy what others take for granted; we suddenly appreciate a simple cup of tea, the safe and familiar sound of the spoon when stirring the sugar, a sunbeam through the window

Think of the small things in everyday life. Feel the pleasure of kneading dough, combing your hair, walking in the rain, making an angel in the snow! Be happy about how incredibly great the small things really are. Never do anything as a matter of routine, do it as if it were the first time. Learn from the child. Never stop being amazed! Maybe it is not just luck that brought us here. Perhaps there is a special reason for living. There could be a unique plan for each one of us. If we find that plan we may have found the truth inside us. Our deep yearning for satisfaction could in itself be an indication of the existence of something that could satisfy us, the goal for our searching and yearning. This is what Aristotle called the final cause. The reason for the rain to fall is that the earth needs it. But this is belief, not knowledge.

All true philosophers should keep their eyes open. Even if we have never seen a white crow, we should never stop looking for it. And one day, even a sceptic like me could be obliged to accept a phenomenon I did not believe in before. If I did not keep this possibility open I would be dogmatic, and not a true philosopher.” Jostein Gaarder puts these words in the mouth of the tutor Alberto in Sophies world.

Every answer that humans have found about this world and about the universe is belief and hypotheses. Even the discoveries of science are only theories. Schools today present a concept of the world as if it were knowledge. In reality we dont know much at all. Science provides us with theories that can be proved using scientific methods. That does not mean they are true. It only means there are methods with which we can study a theory or a phenomenon. Another method or survey may prove something else. Its important to remember that. We grown up people like to put things into forms and boxes, calculate and arrange them. It gives us a sense of security in a confused world. But reality is bigger than that. It wont be put in a form. The actual truth wont let us find it so easily. Maybe not until we learn how to view the world through the amazed eyes of a little child.

What contains computer chips, an LCD touch-screen control panel, USB ports and the capability of connecting to the Internet?

The answer: today’s high-tech sewing machine. The same advances in digital engineering found inside the latest personal computers and electronic entertainment gadgets also drive the modern sewing machine.

Not surprisingly, sewing machines are catching on as Mother’s Day gifts. The bells and whistles actually make sewing easier than ever and let Mom customize what she creates with her new machine. She can personalize a pair of jeans with her daughter’s name, turn ordinary T-shirts into glam garments, and whip up fabulous decorator pillows, thanks to modern advances in sewing-machine technology.

Simply put, today’s sewing machine is a high-tech wonder-and best of all, you need no special knowledge of technology to put it to work. “If you haven’t seen sewing machines since high school Home Economics you’ll be amazed at how far they’ve come,” said June Mellinger, Director of Education for Brother International Corporation’s Home Appliance Division.

Today’s sewers and embroiderers take to their computers to hook up to the Internet and download the latest embroidery patterns, or create their own heirloom stitches using templates from inside their machines; create portraits of friends with optional software, family members and pets using thread as paint; and customize gifts with names, faces, messages and unique designs.

Many are inspired to go online and communicate via chat-rooms, blogs and podcasts across the globe, sharing stitches, patterns, and how-to information.

The new technology also does away with the tedium once associated with stitching. Many of today’s machines feature automatic threading, cut threads and craft perfect buttonholes. Some machines even let you design your own unique stitch.

And it’s all done at “warp” speed. “Sewing today is so fast, people are amazed,” Ms. Mellinger continued. “Some machines sew up to 1,000 stitches a minute. What used to take hours to do now takes minutes.”

All that’s fine, but according to Ms. Mellinger, the real “wow” factor is how the machine lets you customize your work. People enjoy giving gifts that are as unique as the gift giver, without needing an engineering degree.

“You can really personalize what you do on your machine, and that’s what Brother users find the most thrilling,” she said. “With the help of optional software, to be able to take a snapshot and let the machine turn that into an embroidery pattern is pretty remarkable-and what’s even more remarkable is how easy it is to accomplish, thanks to Brother’s technology.”

The operators of the present-day CNC cutting machine demonstrate many of the same skills as those possessed by various traditional craftsmen. The operators of the CNC cutting machine include the men and women who design and make cabinets, woodwork, signs, and a whole range of metal, solid surface and plastic objects. The manufacturers who employ these operators know how important it is to have a good quality CNC cutting machine.

A good quality CNC cutting machine has a cutting table that covers the area bounded by a length of four feet and a width of eight feet. A quality table can handle satisfactorily a standard 4 x 8 plate of metal, wood, plastic, glass, or stone. A table that lacks a sufficient length or width will make it necessary for the operator to repeatedly reposition the plate. Operators of the CNC cutting machine refer to such repositioning as indexing.

A good basic CNC cutting machine does both plasma and oxyfuel cutting. Refinements on a basic cutting machine might provide it with the ability to perform other functions, functions such as:

-spotting holes for drilling
-drilling aluminum
-cutting a shape in the sides or end of tubing
-routing wooden shapes.

Other modifications on a CNC cutting machine might be directed at installation of the equipment for laser or water jet cutting.

The selection of a CNC cutting machine will be primarily determined by the nature of cutting that will be performed by the machine operator. For some operations, it will be necessary to do only straight cutting. For other operations, the cutting machine must perform bevel cutting. Bevel cutting allows the operator to trim, reduce, shave, and pare the material in the plate.

Both types of cutting will subject the CNC cutting machine to a fair amount of wear and tear. The manufacturer therefore needs to purchase a machine with adequate customer support. Such support should include the availability of spare parts. An absence of spare parts could require that the electronics of the CNC cutting machine undergo a retrofitting.

A need for retrofitting would deprive the operator of important production time. The need for retrofitting would diminish the quantity of goods that could be sold to the consumer. The need for retrofitting leads to a decrease in the amount of time that the operator will be spending at the CNC cutting machine. That is why the availability of spare parts for a malfunctioning CNC cutting machine remains one of the two chief concerns of the manufacturer. A second prime concern is the size of the cutting table.

The operator of a CNC cutting machine that needs to spend a large percent of time indexing will not have much time to spend on the actual cutting. Hence, the manufacturer will have much less product. Fewer products from the manufacturing facility translate into fewer products on the shelf. Consequently, the need for operators to spend time indexing can prove a detriment to the companys bottom line. A good sales volume reflects the well-planned purchase of a CNC cutting machine.

Most people believe that you should not owe money in order to make money, but the exact opposite can be true in a lot of cases. There are certain techniques that a person can use to make a lot of money even though they are up to their nose in debt. This sounds like it is too good to be true but it is not. This is not any type of scam nor is it illegal. These techniques can be used by virtually anyone who has time and a little patience. Of course, an income is also helpful in most cases, as you will be waiting for money to come in.

As you know, there are two different kinds of debt, positive and negative. In the interest of this discussion, I will explain the differences in simple terms. Positive debt is that which reflects well on your credit report. All loans, credit cards and so on that are paid on time and in good standing with the lender would be considered positive debts. Negative debts are those that are not in good standing and that drag down the rating of your credit score. These reflect poorly on you and there is little that you can do about that unless you manage to bring the negative to a positive by reaffirming with the lender.

Now, it is good to have some positive debt on your record. That is something that a lot of lenders like to see when they are determining whether or not you are worthy of receiving money from them. Now the catch 22 here is that you cannot have too much debt, even if it is all positive. In that case then the lender would have serious doubts about whether or not you would be able to pay for the loan that you are given. So, keep in mind that you will need a very good debt to income ratio. This will ensure that you will receive not only the loan, but also the best possible interest rate for the loan as well.

Now, on to making money. You need to invest and make some solid choices when doing so. The logical choice would be real estate by way of rental properties. This is a good way to make money even when you owe a lot of money. Here is what you do: Watch your local newspaper for a tax sale. This is a sale where the homes in the area are being sold to pay off the back taxes that are owed on them. It is also a great way to find properties that are good for rentals at a small rate. It is not uncommon for you to pick up a house for as little as one thousand dollars.

With this practice you are paying the taxes that are owed and then you own the home. Now there is the matter of the owner. If they can come up with the money within a certain amount of time, normally 30 days, then they can purchase the home back along with a fee that goes to you for paying the taxes. This rarely happens, so you will wind up with whatever homes that you have bid on in most cases. Now, you will need to pay for these homes. So go to the bank and take out a loan for the amount that you need. Get the best interest rate that you can and then pay off the properties.

Once you own the properties you can start renting them out. Use the income from the rent to pay the payments on the loan. When you do this, you are not paying any money out of pocket for the loan and you are increasing your credit rating all around. Not only that, you will most likely make more per month on the rentals than the loan payments so you will have an extra amount of disposable income with little effort.

Let us take an example of a couple. The girl is taller than the man. They are both in deep love. They like each other and they want to be together. But conventions say that man should be taller than the girl. What should they do??

It is because of this belief that girl should be shorter than the boy, that both will be repeatedly taunted by their friends and family. They will be told that it all looks awkward. They will be obliquely advised to separate. The world never lets two lovers live in peace. The world always enters where it has no business. But the trouble is that we cannot go away and stay on a remote island. We have to live in the society and suffer.

If his pair marries, this fact will be pointed out by others and noticed for their lifetime. Even unknown people who have no business will look at them with surprise. That is the reality. In this scenario, what should they do? Should they separate?

Some may opine that they should separate. In my opinion, they should never. As far as they are comfortable with each other, love each other and like each other, they should ignore all the innuendos and stay together. Society has its collective reasoning that has developed over centuries. One of this is that since man is dominant, he should be taller. But society changes with time and conventions change with place. What is not acceptable in one country is welcome in other. Apart from all this reasoning, the central fact is love for each other. Till that remains, the couple should continue life together.

For a while there, the Internet and the World Wide Web showed great promise. They whispered sweet nothings in our ears, promising to be the voice of the marginalized, the new democracy, the great equalizer.

But it wasnt to be, for the Internet has a new master. No, its not Google. No, its not Microsoft. And no, its not even good ole Uncle Sam. Theyre just caretakers. The Internets new master is bigger than theyll ever be, and far, far older.

Meet the master

The Internets new master is the same master who holds the leash of all traditional commercial media.

The Internets new master is money and power. Not the capacity to earn money or the capacity to increase power (although those are certainly nice fringe-benefits). No, the Internets new master is the moneyed, powerful collective. Those who simultaneously mould and reflect mainstream opinion, values, and behavior.

I suppose we should have foreseen it, given the Internets military birthplace. But then, we were young and optimistic, and boy did we want to believe!

A little melodramatic? Perhaps. But fairly accurate nonetheless. Let me explain…

The early promise of equity

The Internet started out as a network of computers set up for military purposes. To cut a long story short, the World Wide Web started out simply because it could; the Internet was there to host it, and the technology was there to deliver it. Both were heralded as the new face of democracy at long last, the voiceless had a voice.

Of course, even in those heady days, we all recognized some fundamental practical and technological limitations which really threw a spanner in the works for the New World Orderless theory. To begin with, the great majority of the worlds population didnt even have access to a computer, much less own one with Internet access. In fact, that was still the case even after the new master took the reins (and probably still is).

But we had faith in the Internets potential. I even wrote a paper in the mid 90s discussing the Internets promise for empowerment, and I quote:

Being such a decentralized, anonymous form of communication, the Internet offers great opportunities to the worlds oppressed improved (anonymous if desired) communications capabilities, and better access to more sources of local and international news, to name just a couple. At the same time, the Internet poses great threats to the worlds existing media and political powers, not only because of the re-distribution of information (and, therefore, power) to the populace, but also because of the apparent impracticality (impossibility?) of regulating the information flowing in and out of any country.

Alas, I did not see the Internets true potential for censorship and control… Content.

He who wields content is king

We often hear that content is king. The logic of the argument is as follows. For some time now, the lions share (some 80%) of Internet traffic to the average website has been coming from the major search engines. Whats more, when people use search engines, they rarely look past the second page of search results. Additionally, research suggests that being number 1 in Google equates to twice as much traffic as being number 2. This means you need to rank in the first two pages of the major search engines ideally at number 1 before your voice begins to be heard. The only way to reach the top of the search engines is to have thousands of links back to your website from other websites. There are two reliable ways of achieving this goal:
1)Publish helpful information on your website and constantly update it so that others link to your site because its so great keep eyes on paper. Some popular methods include news sites, BLOGS, folksonomies, journals, e-newsletters, and customizable web portals like Google Personalized, which allows visitors to choose (from a pre-determined selection) what they see, e.g. news, email, weather, stocks, etc.
2)Write helpful articles and let publishers of newsletters and ezines use them for free on the proviso that they link back to your site. (These articles are quite often written by SEO copywriters, and they need to be submitted to established article banks, from which they are gathered by online publishers for free.)

In other words, to reach the top of the search engines, you need to publish virtual reams and reams of high quality, informed content (i.e. copy). And you need to keep doing it indefinitely.

On the basis of this evidence, the saying that content is king has become somewhat of a truism. But when we look closely, the saying is inaccurate. Theres nothing wrong with the logic; its the conclusion thats the problem. In reality, content is no more king than was the sword. In reality, he who wields the content is king (and I say he with intent, as the wielder is generally male or some patriarchal organization).

And who wields the content? Only those with the social power to command an education and the money to indulge in the time-consuming task of researching, writing, and publishing said content (or those who have the budget and foresight to engage an SEO copywriter).

Wielding content is getting harder

Even for search engine (SEO) copywriters like myself, this is a task which is becoming more and more time consuming, simply because more and more content is being added to the Internet (largely as a result of the content emphasis of search engine ranking!). To illustrate: In 1997, there were an estimated 200 million pages on the World Wide Web (K. Bharat and A. Broder, A technique for measuring the relative size and overlap of public web search engines [WWW1998]). By 1998, that number had jumped to 800 million pages (S. Lawrence and C.L. Giles, Accessibility of information on the web [Nature 400:107-109, 1999]). A mere 7 years later, the estimate is now 11.5 billion pages (A. Gulli and A. Signorini, The Indexable Web is more than 11.5 billion pages [2005]).

In other words, nowadays your Internet opinion is only heard above the virtual din if you can really REALLY churn out the content. And that takes a great investment in time and money.

Information overload the most effective form of censorship

Now dont get me wrong; Im not saying the Internet denies us access to information. It certainly doesnt do that. But ironically, its the Internets very openness that provides its greatest censorship power. With 11.5 billion pages currently online, and nearly 10 million more added each day, were all starting to wonder how much of that information can be trusted. We look for helpful content, and we keep going back for it, but only if we trust the source. And, as a rule of thumb, we only trust websites which:

rank highly in the major search engines;
have a high Google PageRank (PR) – PR is how Google scores importance. It gives all sites a mark out of 10. Any site with a PR of 4 or above is generally considered fairly credible. More and more web-savvy people are using PR to assess site credibility and authority. (You can see the PR of every site you visit by downloading the Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com).); and/or
are referred to us by a friend, colleague, or industry thought leader (which usually only happens if at least one of the first two conditions applies).

The result… We only trust the very people who were feeding us misinformation and disinformation for years before the emergence of the Internet.

And where does this leave average Jo on the street? Even if she has the education, time, and money to publish a website, an increasing state of e-information overload will likely result in the marginalization of her website anyway. At best, shell be seen as an uninformed minority; at worst, a muck-raking conspiracy theorist!

Conclusion dare we hope?

Several generations have wondered what they could achieve if they could only get on TV. Television being what it is, that wish never came to fruition unless you were happy to appear on the Jerry Springer Show, Cops, or Judge Judy, or you have what it takes to star in American Idol, Big Brother, Amazing Race, or Survivor. Then along came the Internet. It claims to offer everything TV cannot. Unfortunately, as it stands, the Internet is no more true to its promise than TV. The vast majority of high ranking, highly trafficked websites are published by powerful, affluent corporations. There are a few anomalies, but theyre no more than that. Like the everyday people on reality TV, the small-time stars of the Internet are the exceptions to the rule.

But I havent given up hope. All previous comments notwithstanding, Im inclined to see the cup as half full. After all, every now and then, when the masters back is turned, someone manages to slip the beast a treat to get it to perform a trick or two (such as a folksonomy). I like to think that my early days of optimism were something more than idealism bolstered by naivety. I still believe the technology of the Internet offers great promise. I just hope that the powers that be dont have too great a head start, and that all of us small people wont be pushed to the margins where well have to content ourselves with a lifetime of chanting Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!

Maybe folksonomies are the answer or the prelude to the answer or a part of the prelude. Or maybe the Internet will turn out to be historys greatest hoax after all. I dont know. What I do know is that Im looking forward to watching it unfold. For better or for worse, it will certainly be interesting…

Some of these adware spyware programs are harmless as they are used to track browser habits and geological location as a result are only a minor annoyances and can be cleaned from your system easily with nearly all adware remover programs. However some more infectious adware spyware programs can be potentially harmful to your pc system, your life and your bank account.

A simple solution to this is to arm yourself with an adware removal program that is capable of removing such adware spyware intrusions such as data mining, aggressive advertising tactics, Trojan’s, dialers , malware ( another form of adware), tracking components, and browser hijackers.

Some surveys recently conducted have shown that 85% of all internet users have some form of adware spyware on there computers. On average each of these computer have been infected with an average of 24 adware programs. I know I was alarmed when reading this statistic.

So what is the definition of adware, adware is considered an unreasonable advertising tactic. So how do you catch adware, it is usually installed from software that has no charge as long as you accept the adware agreement.

Adware has been typically known to install alone side such software programs as shareware and freeware. A perfect example of this is the software you install with kazaa.

When installing any programs such as these, remember nothing is for free and the supplier of the software usually has adware spyware hidden in the install file. The purpose for this is to track your movements so they can aggressively market products to you through pop-ups or browser hijacking.

Now on to spyware and this is where adware gets its bad name from. Spyware is extremely intrusive and is very similar in nature to a Trojan in this way any users installing software have no idea they have also given access to spyware.

One of the most common ways to become infected with spyware is through using peer to peer programs which are commonly file sharing or swapping programs you install on your own pc.

Spyware is an independent executable program it can monitor every keystroke on your computer, have a look at the files on your hard drives, install more malicious spyware programs and even change your home page. And while you are trying to work out what is happening all this information is being sent back to whoever created the adware spyware.

Worst case scenario is that these malicious adware spyware programs can transmit your back details and passwords back to whoever wants them.

By now we are all aware of the importance of keeping ourselves in good health. Anyone who has a television or access to the internet knows that our health is one of the most valuable things we have. We frequently hear about the importance of watching our weight, watching our caloric intact and of staying away from too much fat, but how often do we hear a warning about the importance of taking care of our teeth?

Maybe I come by caring about teeth honestly since I am the daughter of a dentist and now the wife of a dentist. Regardless, I am concerned about the lack of concern I see all around me about teeth. I see far too many people sucking down sugar-filled drinks all day long without taking the time to brush their teeth or think about what they are doing for the health of their teeth.

One of the most basic ways you can take a step towards taking better care of your teeth is to get a dental check up with a dentist. I know, many people hate going to the dentist for fear of what will happen there, but I guarentee that you will be glad to get a check up and a cleaning once you have done it. Look for a good dentist in your area in the newspaper, phonebook, through an online search, or by talking with friends. Just find yourself a dentist and make a visit. It is the best way to begin a lifetime of caring for your teeth.

A second step to taking care of your teeth is to brush them regularly. It sounds simple and obvious, I know, but you might be shocked to realize how few people actually brush their teeth regularly. I know too many people (children, teens and adults included) that brush once a day or less! Sound disgusting? It is! You should be brushing your teeth a minimum of twice a day. Begin making good teeth habits now by making yourself brush when you get up in the morning and before you go to bed at night.

Flossing is a third important element to good teeth care. I didn’t start flossing regularly until I was an adult, but since I started I just cannot stop. Flossing is a small thing that makes a huge difference. Caring for your teeth in such a detailed way is a reflection about the level of care you have for your body and your health.

Getting a massage therapy session is a wonderful experience. But, have you ever wanted to go for a massage therapy session and didnt know what type of massage to get? Massage therapy uses numerous techniques that range from full-body stress relief to highly targeted methods that relieve a wide range of muscular pains and dysfunction. Five types of massage that rank among the most popular types of massage are Chair massage, Medical Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, and Aromatherapy Massage.

Yesterday, I got the shock of my life when a woman suddenly stood in front of me as I waited in line inside my favorite coffee shop. The woman was in her mid-40s and apparently was a top business executive. For the life of me, I could not understand why she had the gall to cut in line. I felt my blood rush to my head and my heart thumping so loud — this time, because of anger. For me, it was another moment of anxiety in an already stressed out week. The good thing about the incident was that I was able to maintain my composure and did not allow Ms. No Manners to get to me. I just calmed myself and decided not to make a big deal out of it. After all, that woman may be just like me — a stressed-out career woman.

Though it is the fourth largest public school system in the United States, Florida Schools have consistently ranked close to the bottom on academic indicators, including high school graduation rates and national assessment of education progress test scores. For the past few years, Florida schools have been implementing programs to improve student scholastic achievement. Most have been well received and implemented with little-to-no resistance. The End Social Promotion policy, however, has received a lot of resistance from teachers and parents alike and is the most entrenched school custom in Florida schools.

Social promotion is the act of passing onto the next grade a student, who lacks the basic required skills. For many years in Florida schools, retaining or holding back a student has been viewed negatively by teachers, parents and students, placing a stigma upon the retained children and singling them out as abnormally different, inferior and destined to be a failures.

Study research has long held that retention does harm not good, with studies of retained students showing lower test scores in future years as compared to low-scoring students who were socially promoted onto the next grade. Such students were considered a high risk for dropping out of high school, as well.

Florida schools believe that part of this stigma is due to only a small percentage of low-scoring students being retained. If retained students are part of a large group, Florida schools believe the stigma will disappear and retention eventually will be viewed as a positive.

Many educators today believe that much of the previous study results were due to only students with the worse case combinations of skills and personal characteristics being held back, while other low-scoring students were promoted. If everyone in Florida schools sees retention as a beneficial step taken for the students, retained students could benefit from the increased positive attitudes, acceptance and learning atmosphere.

Slowly but steadily, school districts across the United States have begun to require students in particular grades to master basic skills for promotion to the next grade. Chicago was the first system in 1996 to implement a retention policy. Texas and Florida schools followed in 2002, with New York and Philadelphia joining in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Florida schools believe that schools do students no favor by promoting them to higher grades without the basic skills to succeed. The Florida schools End Social Promotion policy requires third grade students to score at a level two benchmark or above on the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

After implementing its retention policy, Florida schools wanted a study to determine the scientific merits and costs (detrimental outcomes) of the retention program. Did attitudes and only specific students being retained influence the previous research? Is the Florida schools End Social Promotion policy working? A study was undertaken.

The Florida schools study compared 2001 low-scoring third graders (before the implementation of the retention policy) to the 2002 low-scoring third graders (the first students subject to retention). In 2001, only nine percent of the low-scoring third graders were retained, as compared to 60 percent in 2002. The study analyzed test score improvements between third and fourth grade for each group. The tests used for comparison were the FCAT and the national Stanford-9. Both are administered at the same time to students. Since only the FCAT is used for the retention program, using the Stanford-9 test scores in the study would indicate if students were prepped only to meet the policy requirements. Additionally, only the FCATs developmental scale scores were used to allow comparison across the two different grade levels.

The findings of the Florida schools study showed that the performance gain of the retained students in 2002 exceeded that of the socially promoted students in 2001. The improvement gains were moderate in reading, yet significant in mathematics. The results were consistent in both the FCAT and Stanford-9 tests, showing the gains were due to student skill mastery rather than prepping.

The study provides valuable information on the short-term effectiveness of the Florida schools retention policy. Due to the short duration of the study, it neither shows all the possible future benefits a student gains from retention, nor does it address any possible long-range negative effects. However, it did provide a surprising result in the substantially improved mathematics scores.

Overall, the study shows that increased efforts by teachers and students to avoid a second retention does improve student proficiency. Whether the effects continue into the future for Florida schools, only time will tell.

The responsibles for the construction of the stadium that will host the opening match between Costa Rica and Germany are the architects Herzog and DeMeuron; they opted for a similar construction as the old Munich Olympic stadium which was categorized as one of the most spectacular pieces of post-war architecture in Germany.

Its particular cover is made of acrylic tiles held by high steel masts. The circumference is 800 meters and it has a capacity of 66.000 seats.

The new stadium will look like an enormous Zeppelin with a length of 259 meters, 227 meters width and 50 meters height.

The structure is covered by a skin of more than 2784 pillows all puffed up with air and stuffed with up to eight light bulbs. The special skin floats above the 7 floors that compose the monumental stadium. The skin is made of a special material which will withstand heavy weather, snow, rain and also fireproof. Those pillows can be illuminated of different colors and all the seats are sheltered from the rain. With the largest parking area in Europe which has a capacity of 11.000 cars, the visitors will be guided by the colors of their teams.

Its name came up because of the Allianz insurance company which donated 110 hundred million Euros in order to have their logo and name associated with the considered the most attractive soccer stadium in the world for many people.

The total cost for this amazing soccer arena was 340 million Euros with another 300 million invested on the preparation for the World Cup inauguration of the first match of the tournament.

The growth of the counterfeits parts industry is causing problems for motorists, suppliers, manufacturers, and governments from around the world. Just how bad is the problem? For starters, the manufacturing and distribution of counterfeit car parts is a multi billion dollar per year business. Car owners from the Kia to the Camaro and from the Geo to the Golf, and every make and model in between are all susceptible to getting hooked with fake parts. This doesnt have to happen and I am going to share with you how you can avoid being deceived by purveyors of bogus car parts.

Read the labels. Fake parts purveyors are getting very crafty in copying logos and other important information off of product boxes. Check for typographical errors or odd sounding language on the boxes. Most counterfeiters are smart when it comes to crime, but pretty dumb when it comes to understanding the proper use of English terms, grammar, and spelling. For example, brand names spelled wrong such as Monrow for Monroe. One more point: packaging may be correct but sized wrong; be suspicious of any part sold to you in a package that isnt sized according to the product it holds.

Check the part. If the texture of a part seems odd, it could be a fake. For example, that Hella headlight may not be what it appears to be especially if the element inside looks cheap or broken, or if too much plastic was used in the development of the casing.

Know your supplier. Purchasing your parts from a reliable supplier isnt a 100% guarantee that the parts received are genuine. Still, if they back up what they sell with a guarantee you wont get stuck should a counterfeit part get passed through them to and on to you.

Buy OEM or better. Only purchase parts that meet or exceed stringent original manufacturer requirements. Prices 70, 80, or 90% lower than retail rates should raise a warning flag. Stick with the name brands; there is a reason why products from Bosch, Covercraft, Denso, Flowmaster, Injen, K&N, and others sell so well: they are trusted names associated with well known brands. Avoid generic or no name brands.

If you think that you have been sold bogus parts, inform the local police as well as the parts supplier of the problem. If you buy from an overseas company, the chances of you receiving a refund from them are slim. When purchasing online only purchase through those retailers who have an established track record and are reachable through a toll free number. You may save money in the short run with bogus parts, but you will lose in the long run with Volkswagen or other parts that are defective or even dangerous.

Kakuro puzzles are considered by some as the harder version of its more famous partner, the Sudoku puzzles. Kakuro puzzles are also considered by puzzles enthusiasts as modified versions of crossword puzzles, where numbers, instead of words, are used.

Actually, Kakuro puzzles have several similarities to the typical crossword puzzle. For one, the grid in a Kakuro very much resembles the grid used in American crossword puzzle. Also, in a crossword game, a clue is provided but its correct answer is limited to the number of squares provided by the game as well as by the intersecting answers. This is very much the same thing with Kakuro, where a player must find the two single digits that will add up to a specific value but must be limited to the number of squares provided as well as on the intersecting sums. Note must also be given to the fact that in a Kakuro game, no sum should contain the same digit twice.

Kakuro puzzles, more commonly referred as Cross Sum in its early days of development, are not entirely new. They have enjoyed tremendous as well as continuous popularity in Japan since 1986. However, the awareness of the game’s existence, especially in the United States and in many parts of the Western world, has risen only very recently. In this regard, it does not come as a big surprise to see major websites nowadays taking advantage of the puzzle’s growing popularity by dedicating their page or pages to Kakuro in the past month or so. Blogs that discuss Kakuro techniques and solutions are also increasing by leaps and bounds.

The latest news about the Kakuro puzzles is that Conceptis Puzzles, the world leader in the international logic puzzles market, has launched last February a modern version of the puzzle game, which it appropriately called Conceptis Kakuro. The puzzle company has secured the services of King Features to handle the syndication of the game to daily newspapers all around the world. In addition, Conceptis is also set to release several Kakuro magazines and books in the coming months in cooperation with several international publishing houses.

Conceptis Puzzles said its version of the Kakuro puzzles involved the use of correlation algorithm to make the puzzle really easy, so that the greatest number of people possible can get to enjoy playing the game to the maximum. The Kakuro algorithm creates in the game one starting point in each one of the four blocks, and makes sure that conflicts do not emerge when players begin to solve the puzzle all the way to its logical conclusion.

Kakuro puzzles, Conceptis style, are reported to be available in six different levels, ranging from the very easy to the extremely difficult. They also come in different sizes such as the 8 by 8, the 10 by 10, the 12 by 12, the 14 by 14, just to name a few. This makes the Kakuro puzzles of Conceptis more fun and exciting to solve and a perfect fixture in many newspapers as well as books in any part of the world.

Eczema is a form of dermatitis, or inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. The term eczema is broadly applied to a range of persistent or recurring skin rashes characterized by redness, skin edema, itching and dryness, with possible crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing or bleeding. Areas of temporary skin discoloration sometimes characterize healed lesions, though scarring is rare.

The most common types of eczemas are:

* Atopic eczema (aka infantile e., flexural e., atopic dermatitis) is thought to be hereditary, and often runs in families whose members also have hay fever and asthma. Itchy rash is particularly noticeable on face and scalp, inside of elbows, behind knees, and buttocks. Experts are urging doctors to be more vigilant in weeding out cases that are in actuality irritant contact dermatitis. It is very common in developed countries, and rising.

* Contact dermatitis is of two types: allergic (resulting from a delayed reaction to some allergen, such as poison ivy or nickel), and irritant (resulting from direct reaction to, say, a solvent). Some substances act both as allergen and irritant (e.g. wet cement). And some substances cause a problem after sunlight exposure, bringing on phototoxic dermatitis.

About three fourths of contact eczema are of the irritant type, which is the most common occupational skin disease. Contact eczema is curable provided the offending substance can be avoided, and its traces removed from ones environment.

* Xerotic eczema is dry skin that becomes so serious it turns into eczema. It worsens in dry winter weather, and limbs and trunk are most often affected. The itchy, tender skin resembles dry cracked river bed. This disorder is very common among the older population. Ichthyosis is a related disorder.

* Seborrheic dermatitis also known as cradle cap in infants and dandruff causes dry or greasy scaling of the scalp and eyebrows. Scaly pimples and red patches sometimes appear in various adjacent places. In newborns it causes a thick, yellow crusty scalp rash called cradle cap which seems related to lack of biotin, and is often curable.

Eczema diagnosis is generally based on the appearance of inflamed, itchy skin in eczema sensitive areas such as face, chest and other skin crease areas. However, given the many possible reasons for eczema flare ups, a doctor is likely to ascertain a number of other things before making a judgment.

Dermatitis severely dries out the skin. Keeping the affected area moistened can promote healing and retain natural moisture. This is the most important self-care treatment that one can use in atopic eczema.

The use of anything that may dry out the skin should be discontinued and this includes both normal soaps, dish soaps, detergents and bubble baths that remove the natural oils from the skin.

The moistening agents are called ‘emollients’. The rule to use is: match the thicker ointments to the driest, flakiest skin. Light emollients like Aqueous Cream may dry the skin if it is very flaky.

Emollient bath oils should be added to bath water and then suitable agents applied after patting the skin dry. Generally twice daily applications of emollients work best and whilst creams are easy to apply, they are quickly absorbed into the skin and so need frequent re-application.

Ointments, with their lesser water content, stay on the skin for longer and so need fewer applications but they must be applied sparingly if to avoid a sticky mess.

What is a tablet PC, how is it different from a laptop and is it the right computer for you? To find the answer to these questions lets take a look at tablet PCs and how they work.

Tablet PC’s were originally designed to put mobile computers in the hand of people working in the field. The people using them spent the majority of their time away from a desk and wouldnt have access to a keyboard or mouse. Users would make entries via stylus or digitizer. The lightweight and highly portable nature of these types of computers made them perfectly suited to field technicians and health care workers. These original models are known as slate tablets do to their distinctive one piece design. The entire computer screen and all was encased in one small unit, usually weighing 4 pounds or less. All of the units came with ports for connecting an optional keyboard, mouse, CD/DVD drive, printer, monitor or other computer peripherals. By choosing not to include all of these peripherals computer manufacturers were able to shave off pounds and lengthen the battery life considerably.

Many people were attracted to these new tablet PCs but still wanted a traditional keyboard setup. Manufacturers responded to consumers demand and the convertible tablet PC was born. A convertible tablet PC looks very much like a small notebook computer. Aside from the monitor it functions exactly like a traditional laptop computer. The monitor is attached on special hinge that allows the monitor to swivel, making it an extremely powerful tool for small customer presentations and demonstrations. The monitor is also capable of swiveling completely around and lying on top of the keyboard with its screen facing up. This gives it the appearance of the traditional slate tablet PC. Convertible tablet PCs traditionally have a larger viewing screen, larger hard drive, larger battery, and other accessories. These extras make it a much more powerful computing platform, but they also make it heavier and more expensive.

Is a tablet PC the right PC for you? The real question is how portable does youre computing lifestyle have to be? Do you spend a lot of time outside of a traditional office environment? Do you need to use a computer to record or makes notes while youre walking, or moving from place to place, if so a tablet PC is the perfect choice for you? For salespeople or business men who spend a lot of time traveling a convertible tablet is probably a much better option. It gives them more power, and more features, with a more traditional computer setup.

A pedometer is a great inexpensive exercising tool that tracks your progress and keeps you motivated to stick to your daily workout. Lets take a look at what exactly a pedometer is and why you need one.

A pedometer is a small electronic device, about the size of a pager or smaller. The basic function of a pedometer is to track or count how many steps you take. Most models will also convert our steps into the number of miles you walked and calculate how many calories you have burned. More advanced models will save several days worth of date and some will even connect to your computer so you can chart your progress through software provided as well.

So the pedometer helps you keep track of how many steps you walked. I find that I’m much more motivated to take a little walk through the neighborhood, or park a little further when I’m running errands when I’m wearing my pedometer.

A recent study by the University of Minnesota shows that people wearing pedometers tend to walk more. The study split people up in two groups who were both encouraged to walk each day. Only one group was given pedometers to track their steps.

Those with pedometers increased their steps by about 2100 per day, or 20 minutes of steady walking, a 30% increase in daily steps. They walked almost twice as many blocks as those without pedometers. People using a pedometer also tend to stick much longer with a walking routine.

To get the most out of your pedometer, set daily and weekly goals. Start by setting a baseline number of steps. To do this, simply wear the pedometer for a few days. Dont try to aim for a certain number of steps. All you are doing at this point is measuring how many steps you take in a normal day. Calculate the average number of steps you take any given day. Next you want to start taking 500 to 1000 steps each day. You can easily accomplish this by taking a little walk around the block, parking a little further away during errand and at work, as well as walking to a colleges office instead of calling him or her. Each week, or every two weeks increase your steps and additional 500 to 1000 steps until you reach a minimum of 10,000 steps per day. If you are walking to lose weight, work yourself up to 12,000 to 15,000 steps per day.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to exercise every day and a pedometer will help you track your progress and motivate you to keep walking. All you have to do is put on some comfortable shoes, clip on your pedometer and put one foot in front of the other. I encourage you to give walking and using a pedometer a try.

Are you tired of traffic jams, increasing air pollution and ever increasing fuel prices? Do you want to do something about all this?

Now you can by forming a carpool. Indimoto has launched Indimoto.com an auto classifieds site which is also Indias first carpool matching site. A carpool or rideshare is an arrangement wherein people share their vehicles with other carpoolers and commute together. The objective behind Indimoto.com was to build an auto classifieds site where users can buy and sell cars and bikes, auto products and services, search for auto events, auto clubs and carpools. Our carpool matching service is the first of its kind in India and through it we wish to enable commuters to easily form carpools and enjoy its benefits while contributing to saving the environment says Udit Bhandari, founder & CEO Indimoto.com.

According to Udit Carpools make lot of sense because you save money by sharing fuel costs, vehicle maintenance cost & parking fee, you save the environment by saving fuel and reducing harmful exhaust gases while reducing traffic congestion. By carpooling you also expand your network of friends/contacts. Indimoto.com allows users to search carpool offers and requests in his/her city, and also start ones own carpool by posting a free ad in the carpool section.

With growing air pollution levels in our metro cities, manic traffic jams and increasing burden of fuel prices on commuters wallets, there are only two alternatives, public transport or carpools. Public transport infrastructure is not yet a comfortable and logical alternative to private transport for many urban commuters and thats where carpools come in. Also carpools generate a sense of community and caring for your environment says Udit. Carpools are a common phenomenon in the developed world often supported by city and state government for the many advantages they offer. Indimoto.com has taken the initiative in India wants to make it a habit amongst Indian commuters.
